An Extensive Record of Conspiracy Theories That Turned Out to Be True

There is a weapon that the powerful have wielded against the truth-seeking common man for generations. It is not a gun. It is not a bomb. It is two words — conspiracy theory — and they are deployed with surgical precision every time a citizen dares to suggest that those in power are doing exactly what the powerful have always done: lie, manipulate, experiment, murder, and cover their tracks while the rest of us go to work, pay our taxes, attend our churches, and trust that the institutions we were born into are acting in our interests.
They are not.
The Catholic Church teaches that authority is legitimate only when it serves the common good and operates within the moral order established by God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states plainly that civil authority is bound by the moral order and cannot legitimately demand of citizens anything contrary to that order. And yet, the documented historical record — not speculation, not rumor, not the rantings of men in aluminum foil hats — proves beyond any reasonable doubt that governments, corporations, intelligence agencies, and powerful private institutions have engaged in acts so profoundly evil, so breathtakingly arrogant in their contempt for human dignity, that they should rattle the bones of every person still willing to reflexively dismiss the skeptic.
What follows is not a list of theories. What follows is a list of facts. Proven. Documented. Admitted. In some cases, apologized for. In most cases, never truly punished.
Read it slowly. Remember it carefully. And the next time someone calls you a conspiracy theorist for refusing to trust a system with this kind of a track record, show them this.
PART ONE: GOVERNMENT EXPERIMENTS ON HUMAN BEINGS WITHOUT CONSENT
1. Project MKULtra — CIA Mind Control Program (1953–1973)
The CIA ran a secret program from 1953 to 1973 to test drugs, including LSD, and other methods for mind control and interrogation on unwitting citizens. CIA Director Richard Helms attempted to destroy all MKULtra files in 1973 to keep it secret. Despite this, the Church Committee investigation in 1975 uncovered the program, confirming that the CIA had indeed conducted illegal experiments on humans without consent. The novelist Ken Kesey was an early volunteer subject. Later, people were dosed without any knowledge or agreement. MKULtra left many victims permanently mentally disabled.
This was not a rogue agent working alone. This was a sanctioned, funded, multi-decade program of the United States government — conducting experiments on its own citizens that would have been prosecuted as war crimes if conducted by an enemy.
2. The Tuskegee Syphilis Study (1932–1972)
In 1932, the U.S. Public Health Service conspired with the Tuskegee Institute to create a phony syphilis treatment program. The experiment involved lying to almost 400 African-American men who had been diagnosed with syphilis. For 40 years these men were often given dangerous chemicals and offered painful and unnecessary medical procedures under the guise of actual treatment. The fact that penicillin had become a known cure for syphilis was hidden from the patients so that the researchers could learn more about the disease. The experiment's existence was exposed by the press in 1972, sparking public outrage. This once-dismissed rumor of a government medical conspiracy was conclusively proven by internal documents and later acknowledged with a public apology in 1997.
Forty years. They had a cure. They withheld it. From four hundred men. And the government called them patients.
3. Project Sunshine — The Harvesting of Dead Infants (1950s)
In the wake of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the U.S. government commenced a major study to measure the effects of nuclear fallout on the human body. Because they needed young tissue, they recruited a worldwide network of agents to find recently deceased babies and children, and then took samples and even limbs — each collected without notification or consent from the families.
Not stolen bodies. Stolen parts of dead babies, from grieving parents who were never asked. Filed under science.
PART TWO: GOVERNMENT SURVEILLANCE, INFILTRATION, AND SUPPRESSION OF CITIZENS
4. COINTELPRO — The FBI's War on American Citizens (1956–1971)
The FBI's Counter Intelligence Program infiltrated, surveilled, and disrupted civil rights groups, anti-war organizations, and prominent activists including Martin Luther King Jr. The program was exposed in 1971 when activists broke into an FBI field office and stole classified documents, revealing systematic violations of constitutional rights. FBI director J. Edgar Hoover issued directives ordering FBI agents to "expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize" the activities of these movements and especially their leaders. The projects gathered under the umbrella of COINTELPRO went far beyond mere smear campaigns — psychological warfare and political assassinations were all fair game.
Martin Luther King Jr. had his telephone tapped. Black Panther leaders were assassinated. Women's rights organizers were infiltrated. Anti-war protesters were destroyed. All under the direction of the federal government. Not a foreign power. Our own.
5. NSA PRISM Mass Surveillance Program (2007–2013)
Edward Snowden's 2013 revelations confirmed that the National Security Agency was conducting mass surveillance on American citizens through partnerships with major tech companies. The program collected emails, chat logs, photos, and other personal data without warrants, directly contradicting official denials. List25
Every denial was a lie. Every official who looked the American people in the eye and said this program did not exist was lying. The paperwork proves it.
PART THREE: GOVERNMENT DECEPTION TO MANUFACTURE WARS
6. The Gulf of Tonkin Incident (1964)
In 1964, the U.S. government claimed that North Vietnamese forces attacked two American destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin. This led to Congress passing a resolution that escalated U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Years later, documents and reports revealed that the second attack likely never happened. Officials had exaggerated or misrepresented the events. Declassified intelligence documents revealed that the Maddox had provided support for South Vietnamese attacks on a nearby island and that the North Vietnamese were responding in kind.
More than 58,000 American soldiers died in a war launched on a fabricated provocation. Millions of Vietnamese civilians perished. And the men who knew the truth kept it classified for decades.
7. Operation Northwoods (1962)
In 1962, the CIA planned to stage terrorist attacks on American citizens and military targets in Miami and Washington, blame it on the Cuban government, and convince the American public to wage war on Cuba. The plan involved killing innocent people and soldiers, blowing up U.S. ships and Cuban refugee boats, hijacking airplanes, and planting phony evidence to implicate the Cuban government. Operation Northwoods was authorized by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and presented to the Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, before President John F. Kennedy rejected it.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff — the highest military command in the United States — signed off on a plan to murder American civilians as a pretext for war. It is not a theory. It is a declassified document with their signatures on it.
PART FOUR: GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION AND CRIMINAL CONSPIRACIES AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS
8. Watergate (1972–1974)
The Nixon administration authorized a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters and then engaged in an extensive criminal cover-up that reached into the Oval Office itself. The Watergate scandal stands as one of the most significant political scandals in American history, illustrating the profound impact of investigative journalism and the importance of accountability in government. Nixon resigned the presidency rather than face impeachment. Multiple officials went to federal prison.
9. The Iran-Contra Affair (1985–1987)
In the 1980s, senior U.S. officials secretly facilitated arms sales to Iran, which was under an arms embargo. Profits from the sales were used to fund Contra rebels in Nicaragua, violating congressional bans. The scandal involved deception at the highest levels of government. When the story broke, it led to investigations and multiple convictions. It was a textbook case of a conspiracy proven true.
Senior officials of the executive branch of the United States government broke federal law, lied to Congress, and funded paramilitary operations with the proceeds of illegal weapons sales. This was not hypothetical. People went to prison.
10. The Business Plot — Fascist Coup Against FDR (1933)
In 1933, Senator Prescott Bush — father of George Bush Sr. and grandfather of George W. Bush — tried to create a military coup against President Franklin D. Roosevelt and install a fascist dictatorship in the United States. The plot included wealthy businessmen from Chase Bank, Goodyear, Standard Oil, GM, and the Du Pont family. Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler was asked to lead the coup. Butler gathered evidence of the conspiracy and presented it to a Congressional Committee.
The men who owned American industry attempted to overthrow the American government and replace it with a fascist dictatorship. They chose the wrong general. It is part of the congressional record.
PART FIVE: CIA COVERT OPERATIONS, ASSASSINATIONS, AND MEDIA CONTROL
11. Operation Mockingbird — CIA Control of the American Press (1950s–1970s)
The CIA recruited journalists from major news organizations to spread propaganda and influence public opinion. It was not until 2007 when a series of documents known as the Family Jewels revealed secret CIA operations such as Project Mockingbird to the public.
The agency responsible for foreign intelligence operations was running a domestic propaganda program through mainstream American news outlets. The next time a reporter smugly dismisses something as a conspiracy theory, remember what their predecessors were doing for pay.
12. CIA Foreign Assassinations and Coups
The CIA was responsible for the assassinations of Mossadegh in Iran and Allende in Chile, as well as other leaders and revolutionaries in Central and South America, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Asia. They made their assassinations appear like car accidents, suicides, cancers, and heart attacks. When their declassified "Heart Attack Gun" wasn't necessary, they would just shoot their targets with actual bullets. While all of this is part of the congressional record, it's still common for people to laugh this one off as a nutty conspiracy theory.
The United States government, through its intelligence apparatus, overthrew democratically elected leaders in sovereign nations and murdered them. This is in the congressional record. It is not a theory.
13. The Dalai Lama on the CIA Payroll
The 14th Dalai Lama was on the CIA payroll to the tune of $180,000 per year for much of the 1960s, according to declassified documents from the State Department.
The smiling monk of peace, beloved symbol of enlightened spirituality, was a funded asset of American intelligence.
PART SIX: CORPORATE CONSPIRACIES AGAINST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE
14. The Tobacco Industry Cover-Up (1950s–1990s)
In 1994, seven CEOs of major tobacco companies raised their right hands before Congress and swore that nicotine is not addictive — a claim proven false by their own internal documents released later. Subsequent lawsuits uncovered millions of pages of internal memos showing the industry understood the health risks but ran disinformation campaigns to cast doubt on the science.
Seven corporate executives committed perjury before Congress in broad daylight. Their own documents proved it. The legal settlements were massive. The criminal accountability was negligible.
15. Exxon and the Climate Cover-Up
This evidence demonstrated a corporate conspiracy to mislead the public and investors about climate change. What many had called a conspiracy theory — "Exxon knew, and lied about it" — is now supported by the company's own documents and peer-reviewed studies.
Exxon's own internal scientists understood what fossil fuel emissions were doing to the atmosphere. Exxon's external PR machine spent decades and millions of dollars funding doubt. Their private memos said one thing. Their public statements said the opposite.
16. The 2008 Subprime Mortgage Conspiracy
Banks knowingly originated and sold mortgages to borrowers who couldn't afford them, then packaged these loans into complex securities while hiding their true risk. The conspiracy involved mortgage brokers, investment banks, and rating agencies.
They knew. They sold it anyway. Millions of Americans lost their homes and their savings. The architects of the scheme received bonuses. The system absorbed the damage and continued.
17. The Bernie Madoff Ponzi Scheme
Madoff operated the largest Ponzi scheme in history for decades, using new investor money to pay earlier investors while claiming consistent returns. The $65 billion fraud was enabled by regulatory failures and willful ignorance from oversight agencies.
The regulatory agencies that existed precisely to prevent this were warned repeatedly by outside analysts. They ignored those warnings for years. Willful ignorance in the service of the powerful is not incompetence. It is complicity.
PART SEVEN: GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS OF SCIENTIFIC AND MORAL HORROR
18. Operation Paperclip — Nazi Scientists in American Programs (1945–1959)
After World War II, the U.S. secretly brought over more than 1,600 German scientists, including known Nazis, through Operation Paperclip. These individuals helped advance American rocketry and military technology, including the space program. Their pasts were downplayed or erased to avoid public backlash. The Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency decided these men were of vital importance to the development of the U.S. rocket program, created false employment and political biographies for the scientists, and completely destroyed all evidence connecting them to the Nazi war machine.
Men who used slave labor and conducted human experiments under the Third Reich were given new identities, federal salaries, and American citizenship. The government destroyed the evidence. The program was kept secret for decades.
19. The Scientology Operation Snow White — Mass Government Infiltration (1970s)
During the 1970s, 5,000 covert agents from L. Ron Hubbard's Church of Scientology conspired to perform the largest infiltration of the U.S. government in American history. The church infiltrated 136 organizations including the IRS, the DEA, foreign embassies, and other government agencies. They installed wiretaps and stole hundreds of documents. On December 6, 1979, Operation Snow White ended when Mary Sue Hubbard and 10 other high-ranking Scientologists received five-year prison sentences.
A private religious organization ran five thousand covert agents across thirty countries and successfully infiltrated more than a hundred government agencies. They nearly got away with it.
20. The My Lai Massacre Cover-Up (1968–1969)
U.S. Army troops killed hundreds of unarmed Vietnamese civilians, including women and children, in the village of My Lai. Military leadership initially covered up the massacre, claiming it was a successful combat operation against enemy forces.
Hundreds of women, children, and elderly civilians were murdered. The military filed a combat action report calling it a success. The cover-up held for over a year. Only investigative journalism forced a reckoning — and even then, only one officer was ever convicted.
21. The Black Tom Explosion — German Sabotage on American Soil (1916)
German agents sabotaged a munitions depot in New Jersey during World War I, causing massive explosions that damaged the Statue of Liberty and broke windows in Manhattan. The attack was initially blamed on accidents until evidence of German sabotage emerged years later.
22. The Systematic Cover-Up of Clergy Sexual Abuse — The Catholic Church
This one I will not sanitize and I will not turn away from, because truth is truth even when it wounds the house you love.
From the mid-20th century through the 2000s, Church hierarchy — all the way up to the Vatican — routinely suppressed abuse reports, protected predator priests, and silenced victims to avoid scandal. A Pennsylvania Grand Jury in 2018 documented over 1,000 cases of child abuse by 300-plus priests and concluded that senior church officials knew about the abuse.
As a Catholic, I write this with a sorrow that has no floor. The Church is the Bride of Christ. Her sacraments are real. Her doctrine is true. But the men who ran her institutions chose institutional reputation over the dignity of children, and that choice is the most catastrophic betrayal of the Gospel I can name. The priests who committed these acts and the bishops who moved them from parish to parish will answer before the Living God. No transfer, no silence, no confidentiality agreement reaches that high.
PART EIGHT: WHAT IT ALL MEANS
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that the moral order demands truth. It is not optional. It is not politically negotiable. Deception, manipulation, and the use of power to exploit the weak are not merely political failures — they are moral failures. They are sins. They are offenses against God.
The phrase "conspiracy theory" was deployed by the CIA in the aftermath of the Kennedy assassination to discredit critics of the Warren Commission. It was a propaganda tool then. It remains a propaganda tool now. Every time a person with no evidence demands you stop asking questions because asking questions is itself evidence of mental instability, you are watching a technique pioneered by the same agency that dosed American citizens with LSD without their consent, murdered foreign leaders, and infiltrated the American press.
This is not an invitation to believe everything. Discernment — prudentia, one of the four cardinal virtues — requires weighing evidence carefully, following facts where they lead, and refusing to arrive at conclusions that the evidence does not support. Not every claim is true. Many are false. The existence of false conspiracy theories does not invalidate the documented existence of real ones.
What it is an invitation to do is this: stop trusting power simply because it is power. Stop dismissing the skeptic simply because skepticism is uncomfortable. Stop calling documented history a theory simply because the history indicts institutions you were taught to trust.
The truth does not need your permission to be true. It only needs someone willing to say it out loud.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. And wisdom begins by refusing to be lied to.
